How to reduce the (100%) cpu usage with the vzones client

REDUCE VZONES.EXE CPU USE


This post covers how to make Vzones.exe run at less than 100% CPU usage. This is handy for those who run Vzones on laptops and run into 'overheating' problems, especially with the warm summer days coming up.

Drawbacks:


It only runs on windows 2000 and up, I only tested it on XP, and it works here.
A few notes...
I would like to emphasize that the problem should be solved within the client, and definitely not on Operating System level.

Questions about usage can be asked in the forum, please don't contact me in world about it. If you have a question on it, odds are more people have the same question, and thus it's easier to post it in the thread where it's readable for everybody.

DISCLAIMER:

Required knowledge:
From here, elementary knowledge of Windows is required.
Knowledge required: downloading and unpacking a zip file, editing an ini file with notepad, and (maybe) know how to work with a CMD prompt.

I still didn't scare you? Here we go.

Step 1
Download VZCPULimit.zip (http://www.emmeau.com/div/files/VZCPULimit.zip) and unpack this to preferable c:\VZlimiter (but any folder will do, just remeber where you unzipped it)

Step 2
Edit the ini file (first time, just start the limiter, and see if it's working). Below is the one I'm using, but depending on your system it might need tweaking.[Settings]

TimeOn=1

;Process suspended time period, msec
TimeOff=30
On my AMD 2400 these settings will make Vzones run at 5% CPU usage, without noticing serious slowdowns in the client.



A quick explanation of the TimeOn and TimeOff parameters :
TimeOn is the amount of CPU time vzones.exe gets.
TimeOff is the amount of time that VZlimiter will 'steal' from Vzones.exe
TimeOn + TimeOff = 100% (roughly)
With TimeOn=1 and TimeOff = 9 this means Vzones gets about 10% CPU time.

Step 3

Start VZlimiter by double clicking it

Step 4
Check in your Windows Task Manager and watch how the Vzones.exe process will use about 5% - 10% CPU usage.


Enjoy your 'cool' laptop running Vzones without your CPU going bezerk :)

I tested this tonight with my hoster running... It works flawlessly. Hoster actually works a bit crisper as well, since it doesn't have to fight with the client. WTG Emm!! My cooling fans didn't even kick in.... vzbow

Just had to try it. W/ settings of 1/9, it's fluctuating between about 5 to 12% CPU on my WXP desktop (AXP 2600+). Can't try it on my old PIII laptop, currently, since that runs W98SE. Now I think I'll reformat it and install W2K.:D

I can't believe my fan actually turned OFF while running the nH client *faints*. My laptop in general thanks you and my CPU and fan in particular thank you Emm!! change: TimeOff=9 in a higher value, make it TimeOff=30 or so.

After changing the ini file, stop the program with the link, (or use the /q switch) and then restart it again.

The faster your pc, the higher you can put the TimeOff value. It's just a matter of experimenting for the value that will work best for you.

Before I do the d/l could you please advise on whether this will help my Gateway desktop work better when using 'say' the bingo card while it's set on auto? Actually even if it is or isn't still on 'auto' after approx 2nd game my keyboard starts skipping letters [ya know that spongy feel?].

And may I pretty please ask advice on something relative ...
I don't use my Gateway laptop often but when I do the LOUD fan runs almost continually...regardless of whether I'm IW.

What do you suggest for best laptop power setting? Am assuming this would be associated with consumption.
It's a setting in Control Panel and has several options.

Unfortunately I'm not using laptop at moment so can't be specific.

1. The program will work on any computer, desktops, laptops, and it will benefit any system basically. Reason the 'cooling effect' is bigger on laptops is due to the fact that laptops have far smaller fans to move the heat out.

On desktops, it still will bring down the CPU usage to 'more acceptable levels', and thus benefitting other programs.

2. No, you don't need to change a thing in the power settings really. The program works completely independant from any window settings.

as it all things, programs like this come at a cost, which for slower computers means it will 'lag' you a bit (or more).

try increasing timeoff to higher settings, like 50 or even 100. Make sure to stop the program correctly, and restart it.

multi avi looks okay to be released soon, which will be easier to stop and start (for bingo games I do not recommend the use of this program for example)

changes:

No more hidden proces, the limiter runs as a windowed cmd prompt. To end the program just close it by hitting the [x] (makes it easier to adjust the ini file to suit your needs)
INI file simplied, basically now all you do is play with the 2 parameters to give the clients more or less time
tips:

Current ini file gives 2 clients 5% cpu time each on an AMD 2400.
Keep in mind, hosters and game cards can start lagging if you don't give the VZones client enough cpu time.

This software comes as is, don't blame me if it doesn't work. All disclaimers as in first post apply.

I downloaded and installed the multi-avi version, and with two signed on, it is doing a surge from 30 - 60 - 30% consistant ?

On other puters that I use this works awesome.

What ini file are you speaking of, and where will I find it ?

the multi avi version zip file has 2 files in it, vzcpulimiter.exe and vzcpulimit.ini.

In the ini file you see:

TimeOff=30

Since you got a fast system, try changing timeoff to 60 or maybe 80. I can't say exactly what the right value will be for you, since it depends on system cpu, speed, day of the week, and colour of your mousemate.

The reason it spikes up to 100% is the fact that opening the taskmanager will cost CPU time too. A window has to be drawn (costs cpu time) etc etc.

Initially for 1-2 seconds Taskmanager has to do a lot of work, and will do it as fast as possible = use all possible cpu time (hence the spike), once it's done fetching info, it's a matter of keeping up, which will take far less cpu time.

Hi Lumi,
If you go to the 1st page on this thread you will see where Emm explains adjusting the values in the INI file. Sounds daunting but is really just a text file where you fiddle around with a couple of numbers to make it to your liking.
Also I found it very helpful to read through all the posts on this thread, Again that sounds daunting but it's not really that many posts and had me well on my way to installing this great lil program.

Look at the VZCPUlimit.ini file.

fiddle with TimeOn and TimeOff

try in your case
TimeOn=1
TimeOff=20
if that doesn't work try
TimeOn=2
TimeOff=20
just play a bit with the settings
Basically, the lower the TimeOff, the more CPU the client(s) will use.

Don't remember to close out and start VZCPUlimit after each change in your ini file.

Just minimize the cmd window while running VZ.

If you close out the cmd windows, you end the limiter program. You can just restart the program then.

I tested it under Windows7, too. but there was a kind of Lag. If you klick something (e.g. you read a TMA) - You klick and 1 Second later it move on. Perhaps the "CMD-Box" will not supported good enough by Windows7?

You wil need to adjust the compatibility.

Right Click the Icon
Select Properties
Click the Compatibility tab on the top
Check > Run this program as an administrator

I have a problem, any help will be appreciated.
I am setting up a new PC that has XP Home sp3 and all of the updates installed. It also has Norton Internet Security 2009 installed.
When I try to install VZLimit things do not appear to go as they should. [I have installed it on at least three PCs before without any problems]

I downloaded the file into a new folder, I double clicked on the file and Windows went to the extract Wizard and proceeded to/appeared to, extract the files.

The result was VZCPULimit [the .INI file] and VZCPULimiter which apperas as a DOS box item. When I click on it it opens a DOS box that says:

Then nothing else and the DOS box remains open.

Nowhere can I see a ZVLimiter.EXE file

Does anyone know what is wrong?

What you describe is what I have on my two older PCs but that is not happening with the new PC. I end up with a DOS box style file and, when I launch the program it opens a DOS box that does not close unless I close it manually and has to be minimised to the taskbar to keep it off the screen. Let me start again.

With all previous installations of VZLimit I have ended up with a vzlimit.exe that I put on my desktop and, when I launched it, it did it's stuff in the background. If I tried to run it a second time a windows box would come up saying CPUlimit is already started.

Now, when I put the VZCPULimiter program on my destop and launch it I get the DOS box with the dos style text that I have to minimise to the taskbar to get it out of the way.

Please note the difference in the file names between the old and the new programs.

I, obviously, do not know which is the correct version/result, all I know that it is now very different to what I have become very used to.

You, Sir, are wonderful. My BF and I can now run our lil avatars and not lag out and use 100%, I went from 100% to 15% with 3 accounts and a hoster & skype webcam. I will push this to anyone I see complain about lag and not know what VZ limiter is when I mention it.

<Have a 4mth old gaming comp with GT250 grfx card and 8gig ddr2ram plus a bunch of other funny named things, I could run heavy FPS MMo games but got bogged down when I ran 1 VZ client :confused: >
